Summary of Job

The Adventures Costa Rica Field Mentor creates and carries out the vision, and develops strategic planning, for the spiritual and pastoral care of the short term teams hosted by the Costa Rica team by provided quality care, mentorship, and support through the development of dynamic relationships with the short term teams.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Adventures Costa Rica Field Mentor is responsible for the following ministerial duties:

    • Lead spiritual development disciplines for all short term teams that work with the Costa Rica base

    • Handle disciplinary issues and give feedback to short term teams as needed, communicating with the Squad Mentor or short-term team leadership on how to best handle each situation

    • Spend dedicated time doing ministry alongside short term teams, developing dynamic relationships with the teams and their ministry partners

    • Develop intentional relationships with short terms teams, specifically focused on investing in the leadership

    • Help guide orientations into the spiritual and cultural climates of Costa Rica and the Costa Rica Base

    • Facilitate healthy community, emotional support, and the importance of a safe and healthy team for both the Costa Rica team and short term teams

    • Lead squad-wide or team-wide weekly church services, focusing on prayer, worship, teaching, and activation 

    • Lead bi-weekly team debriefs that are focused on vulnerable, honest conversations about the spiritual and emotional health of the team

    • Develop a team of ministry partners to complete the fundraising goal. (Amount to be determined). Through this process ministering to partners through prayer and teaching biblical truths is essential. (I Corinthians 9:14, Philippians 4:17) Training for this located at: www.support.adventures.org

  • The Adventures Costa Rica Field Mentor accomplishes these ministerial duties through the following administrative tasks:

    • Research, develop, and implement common best practices for both short term team care

    • Strategic planning for self care, missionary care, and team health development for both long term and short term teams

    • Regular communication with the LTM Lead, Adventures Office, Squad Mentors, and Base Leader

    • Regular communication and collaboration with the Long-Term Missions and World Race departments

 

Competencies Required

  • Professing Christian with established record of high Christian character,  integrity, servant leadership, maturity, and a positive attitude 

  • Character and Integrity –must have strong Christian moral principles, be trustworthy, honest, fair, and display the Fruit of the Spirit in both word and action

  • Servant leadership – must lead as Christ did with humility, considering their needs above your own and making it your priority to improve those you serve

  • Maturity –must be strong spiritually, responding appropriately with respect to the time and place of every situation

  • Positive attitude – must always be willing to do your best with what is asked of you

  • Understand and embrace the core values, culture, and ministry of Adventures in Missions. 

  • Ability and desire to teach local Costa Ricans how to live in Christian community

  • Maintain an active role in both the local American community and local Costa Rican community

  • Ability to foster a healthy team environment that is focused on building God’s Kingdom in Costa Rica

  • Able to give direct and constructive feedback and correction when necessary

  • Organize times of prayer, self-reflection, and team discussions

  • Continual learning of language, culture, and missionary care best practices

  • An eagerness to participate in local ministry with all teams

  • A robust knowledge of Scripture and an eagerness to learn more Scripture and continually apply it to more areas of their lives

  • A history of initiating discipleship relationships and stewarding those relationships well, enabling their disciple to make disciples
